Sassicaia Bolgheri Tenuta San Guido 2009 (Super Tuscan): “Super Tuscan” is a term used to describe red wines from Tuscany that may include the use of non-indigenous grapes, particularly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah... Winemakers began mixing 'unsanctioned' wine varieties (like Merlot) into their blends to make high quality wines. Tenuta San Guido is an Italian wine producer in the DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, known as a producer of "Super Tuscan" wine. He produces Sassicaia, a Bordeaux-style red wine, which is undoubtedly one of the best wines in Italy. The estate also produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, Le Difese. Tenuta San Guido is a member of the Primum Familiae Vini.
Tasting notes: With Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and small amounts of Cabernet Franc, it has an intense and bright ruby colour, with good concentration. The bouquet is already complex as fruity notes of blueberry are obvious, adding leather and spice, with hints of graphite in the background. The palate is taut and elegant, with fine tannins, barely perceptible, comparable to those of the great Pauillac wines, but with a greater smoothness and envelopment that leads to a subtle finish which is also made to last.
