Gigondas, Vieilles Vignes, Tardieu-Laurent 2016: Tardieu-Laurent is essentially a super-selective négociant-éleveur, family owned and run. Michel Tardieu is at the helm working alongside with his oenologist son Bastien with his wife Michelle and daughter Camille on administration. The concept of the company centres around Michel’s and increasingly Bastien’s Tardieu's abilities in sourcing small parcels of designated wines from quality fruit, then taking care of their élevage in the Tardieu’s cellar in Lourmarin. Michel has worked tirelessly to build relationships with small growers, over many years, encouraging best practice and sourcing, in the main, low production, old vine fruit. It is Michel’s and Bastien’s meticulous attention to detail, which makes these wines so special. This comes from five plots: La Boussière, Les Garrigues, Les Dentelles, Les Teysonnières and Gour de Chaulé. 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, all of which are from 80 to over 100 years old. Two thirds whole bunch fermentated, before ageing for 12 months in one and two year-old barrels and then 12 months in old oak foudres. This is accessible and overtly charming on the nose, violets and rose petals goading you to take a sip. The medium-bodied palate is tightly coiled at present, with rigorous tannins pointing to a wine with several years of ageing potential ahead. Lovely adroit freshness will safeguard that… Alc 14.5% Grapes: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah.
